CEC not averse to reducing minimum voting age to 16 The Election Commission has said it was examining a proposal to reduce the minimum age for voting right to 16 years from the existing 18. "We may recommend to the government to reduce the minimum voting age to 16 years, if more youths, particularly new voters, participate in the electoral process," Chief Election Commissioner Y S Quraishi told a meeting organised by Youth United for Voter Awareness (YUVA), an NGO in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Centre directs MCI to withdraw notification on entrance tests The Health Ministry, in a 3rd January letter to the Chairman, Board of Governors of MCI, said the notifications have been issued without prior permission from the Centre and therefore "invalid ab-initio".  The letter, sent by Sube Singh, Deputy Secretary to the Ministry, a copy of which was made available to PTI, directed MCI "to withdraw the notifications with immediate effect". Singh said Section 33 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, empowered MCI to make regulations with the previous approval of the central government. 

Saturn rings are "back"  A year after the Saturn's magnificent rings became invisible from the Earth due to a celestial phenomenon; there is good news for skygazers as they can now see them again. The planet went through 'Ring Crossing' on 4 th September last year wherein its rings were aligned along the Earth's line of sight, making it difficult to see them. "The phenomenon occurs after every 14.7 years," R C Kapoor, a scientist at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, said. As the yellowish planet moves round the Sun, its rings, made of countless bodies ranging in size from micrometres to metres, are best seen when the planet reaches opposition when the Saturn rises just as the Sun is setting, he said. Of late, scientists said, the Saturn is tilting and favourably for viewers from the Earth.
