On October 22, 1947 a young Maqbool Sherwani (19) saw thousands of Pakistani raiders (Kabailis) from Baramula. he understood the situation and began thinking to find out the solution. Not wasting a moment he kicked his bike and ran towards the raiders.
Reaching there he began shouting at them- " do not advance towards Srinagar as Indian Army have already reached the out-skirts of Baramulla". Reality was something else. The bluff worked and the enemy froze for 4 days. By then 1st Sikh of Indian Army landed in Srinagar.
The game plan understood by raiders but they couldn't digest that a young lad has made fool. He was put on a wooden cross, nailed & fired upon 10-15 times. he remained like that for 2-3 days. Hence, the day October 27, 1947 marks the landing of 1st Sikh army in Srinagar and is celebrated as " INFANTRY DAY".
