Baby powder sterilization under fire
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled Johnson and Johnson's licence to manufacture cosmetics at its Mumbai plant. The measure was taken after the FDA discovered the use of an unapproved substance - ethylene oxide - in the sterilization process of its baby powder.
A JNJ spokesperson confirmed the FDA measure, Stating, "The method is widely used for medical devices around the world. All internal safety protocols were followed to ensure that the safety of the consumer was not compromised". He added. ' The order pertains to the manufacturing of cosmetic products only. We contribute to manufacture non-cosmetic products at the same site. We are working with the FDA to resolve this issue are confident about the safety of batches of Johnson's baby powder currently under Maharashtra review.
Expert Opinion :-
"There is a possibility of ethylene oxide causing cancer but it has not been proven yet " explains Dr Santosh Kondekar paediatrician, Mumbai.
"Dr. Shailesh Gupta, secretary general Indian Academy of Pediatrics said, " Ethylene oxide is a widely used and competent sterilization method for several medical goods. The Carcinogenic substance is minuscule and said to cause potential risk of cancer but that is being tested and is yet to be proved".
